My Number 1 Tip For Achieving Your Blogging Goals

My Number 1 Tip For Achieving Your Blogging Goals

Posted by Karl Foxley in Blog, Blogging, Coaching

A New Year always brings about the start of setting new goals and what better time to set yourself some goals for your blog.

Have you ever set a goal and then not achieved it?

There are 101 reasons why goals are not achieved, some can even be considered excuses, but to help you get on the right track in 2010 here is my top tip for achieving your goals.

Make a Public Announcement

That’s right, tell the world what your goal is.

I cannot think of a better place to publicly share the goals you have for your blog than your blog itself.

Write a post explaining what your goal is and share it with your readers.

Your post should include 2 things.

  • A specific goal.
  • A deadline.

Let me explain this further.

Be Specific

When I ask people what goals they have set for their website they say things like:

“I want to earn more money.”

“I want more visitors.”

The problem with this is you can earn £1 from 1 extra visitor and you’ve achieved your goals.

Being specific helps you focus on a targeted goal.

“I want to earn an extra £5,000.”

“I want an extra 10,000 visitors”.

This is much better but we can make this even more focused by…

Setting A Deadline

So the above can now look more like this:

“I want to earn an extra £5,000 in the next 3 months”.

“I want an extra 10,000 visitors in the next 6 months”.

After you’ve set your very specific goals and shared them with your readers, it’s time to work hard to make them happen. Don’t forget to post your recap post sharing your experience and whether you achieved your goal or not. Your readers will forgive if you don’t fully achieve your goals as long as they see that you tried.

What do you think? Is this something that could work for you? What are your goals? Share them below before you go off and write your blog post?

To your success,

Karl Foxley

P.s. This tips works for other goals beyond your blog, such as a business website, e-commerce store, etc.

Karl I’m sorry for being so late on this comment. I know it’s been almost a week since the word challenge was done.

I think you said it perfectly here. I loved your example on being specific. It really put some things into perspective for me.

Thanks for participating and hopefully you will get in this weeks word challenge to.

Announcing your goals somewhere is a great way to help you achieve them, as it creates accountability. I could make a goal for myself to do something and never tell anyone, I might forget about it myself. Whereas if I tell people who will motivate me, then I would have a constant reminder of what I am working towards.

Absolutely. That was one of my biggest faults, making goals, on paper or in my head, and then not putting any ‘action’ steps in place to make my goals materialise.

      Thanks for sharing your thoughts.

Annoucing your goals is a very very good tip that works wonderwell, especially with goals that other people can see, such as quitting smoking, nailbiting, posting 3 times a week,…

Yeah, letting others know shows that you are serious and shows how they can help. It worked for me to get my 2010 RSS goal before 2010. And I am hoping it will help in achieving my goal to get more comments :) – they are the true indicator of a blogs success (well; to me they are)

Giving up is the quickest way to failure and never achieving your goals, so glad to here that you will never give up. :)

    Nice sharing tips there, Karl.

Whenever I hear someone setting an unspecific goal to say, I want earn a lot, I want to generate some traffic, most likely they will never achieve it.

Once a goal is set, we are responsible to finish the task and do our best to achieve it.

I’ve written a post about ‘How to Set Your Internet Marketing and Blogging Goals for 2010′ too.

Anyway wishing you have a prosperous 2010.

Truly serendipity to happen across this post today as the post I just published does exactly this (though I don’t set a deadline on all of my 2010 goals just because I haven’t figured it all out yet).

Part of the reason I did it is because I want others to know and to hold me accountable as well as it’s part of my “transparency” in my business.

I’ve laid out some ambitious plans for myself and probably could work full time on just those goals. (which is why I need to delegate more myself!)

Thanks for your work in this post! I’ll be back in the future. (and am following you on Twitter now as well)

Yes, I want 500 new RSS subscribers by May 2010 and I’m going to do this by writing one blog post a week about RSS.

      Thanks for the input Dennis.

That’s a great target to set yourself and, with the RSS subscribers, is easy to check up on if you are using Feedburner or similar.

Setting up goal is needed for every thing.. Me too have published my blog goals by a post in my blog. Goals should be specific and we should try hard to acheive it within the limited time.

Setting goals is probably the most important thing you can do when targeting any sort of online campaign. Write it all down and visualize achieving it.
