Google PageRank Score Too Low? Keep Your Links Thank You

Google PageRank Score Too Low? Keep Your Links Thank You

Posted by Karl Foxley in Blog, Google, Link Building, SEO

This article is not going to be about PageRank or your Google PageRank score but rather a mindset that seems prevalent on the net right now.

If you want to read more about Google’s PageRank then you can get up to speed by visiting here.

Guest blogging is a great way to way to promote your site and generate inbound links to your site (if the site allows it), this is without mentioning the additional benefits of getting your message in front of new readers and building relationships with other web site owners.

Guest blogging is beneficial to all parties involved and has given rise to great sites like Ann Smarty’s My Blog Guest that you can read more about here.

You are probably wondering where all this is leading so I’ll get to the point.

I was reading a site that was promoting the fact that they are now accepting guest blogging.

What prompted me to write this post was what someone had said in the comment section that went something like this:

“You won’t have many people take you up on your offer as your Google PageRank score is too low”

He then went on to say that he certainly wouldn’t be wasting his time writing for such low ranked site.

As this is not the first time I have seen such a comment, or mentality, I decided to write this post to clear something up.

Google PageRank Score And Link Building

I understand what the commenter was saying but I feel that he is missing the point.

Guest blogging will put your message in front of a new audience, an audience (if you have done your research) that will respond well to your message and earn you new readers.

The inbound links you can build through guest blogging are an added bonus if the site allows you to link out to your site.

BUT here is the main error in this guys thinking.

A website that has a low PageRank today may have a very good PR score tomorrow so why NOT take the site owner up on their offer.

With this particular mindset in place, if the site owner does get a good PageRank they may decide to NO longer accept YOUR guest post on their nicely scored site, meaning you have effectively cost yourself  (what you considered) a worthy link.

This goes for any type of link building, sites with a good PageRank may similarly lose their ranking along the way so do not stress about it too much.

If a site looks reputable, has good content, is building a following and the site owner is actively involved in making the site a success, why not get involved no matter what the site’s PageRank is?

What’s your view on this? Let me know by leaving a comment below.

On that note, happy link building.

To your success,

Karl Foxley

Many bloggers have said that Google page rank is now with low importance, but I believe if you are serious to rank in Google, you must primarily consider page rank..

      Hey Johnny,

It is hard to give a single answer when it comes to marketing online and without having the insight into what you are currently doing.

My best advice is always to diversify your tactics / strategies and monitor closely what is working and do more of that and drop what is not working.

Link spammers look for highest available PageRank to comment and guest post so as to reap the benefits earliest possible. They are just a few bubbles, exists for a moment and brust on the next. A good blogger looks far and steps wisely, judges how far a blog can go. Seeding today will let you reap tomorrow. But somebody doesn’t have that much time!

    Hey Karl,

It has been a while since I have been to your site. I like the new look. I have finally got some free time to go back to work on link building and bringing awareness to my site. I have been stuck at a PR3 for almost a year now because of neglect on my part. Time to get things going again. I appreciate all the help you have given me in the past while I was trying to learn my way around the blogosphere.

Before, all I look at is the site’s PR but now there’s more to a site then just PR. A new site will have a PR0 for about 3-6 months their PR will change. It can go from PR0 to PR3 when google bot updates the PR.

Like you said, if the site has good contents and looks professionally done then there’s a good change that it will succeed.

A lot of people seem to be too obsessed with the little green bar, forgetting the main thing about it – it’s not live!! I’ve had many backlinks over the years that I’ve worked hard to get based on their PR, only to see the PR drop like a brick on the next update!! I tend to judge a site on content, not PR – if it’s good and I find it useful, does it really matter what the little green bar says. Like you say, you could be turning down the opportunity to write for a blog that 12 months down the line has a PR7 – the best sites generally rise to the top eventually….

Now I see why this article had such a high rating. I totally agree with you on the points you listed out. After all, do not despise the days of little beginners! That’s what I believe. Just cos I’m nothing now, doesn’t mean I won’t be something tomorrow. However, that said, when it comes to SEO you do have to be careful where you put your link. Hence saying that, I believe you just need to study the website to see if its legit or not. If it’s a clean site that just started out, I’ll definitely willing to jump on board. However, if its a site that’s been around for years and nothing to show for it, than I would begin to wonder and probably dig a little deeper to find out why…

    Great post Karl!

Good points. As you say a bigger factor to me is the quality of the blog. Thee are many good quality blogs with low PR. And PR does not necessarily equate to traffic.

But that is not where I thought you were going. I see a lot of blogs that don’t filter their comments. they have a ton of comments from spam sites. If it is really bad I don’t comment because I don’t want a link from a site that is perceived as bad in Google’s eyes.

I agree completely. Page Rank is a moving target and in the eyes of many it’s on the way out in terms of being able to evaluate the potential for acquiring good SERP’s. Recently, PR was quietly removed from Webmaster Tools. This, among other factors, indicate to many that the nature of link popularity is changing as is the effect on ranking.

The focus is shifting to good, solid, sticky traffic. If you place an article in the right place that captures the right audience and it is good enough to attract someone to you site who might hang around and check you out – mission accomplished! If that happens, I could care less about the PR of the page – it could be a goose egg for all I care.

I try not to let myself judge a blog by it’s PR, especially if it’s low. If the content is relevant and the writing is good, subject matter discussed in an intelligent way, and if it is interesting to me, of value to me, worth my time to read and comment, then I don’t care about it’s PR being a 0.

Like Karl so aptly points out here, a blog with 0 pagerank today, may not always be that way.

I agree, I’ve seen many a blog with low page rank that is well written, informative and more importantly has a large following. Not to mention the potential for follow through traffic from a blog with a supportive community is much higher than a link back from a PR7 .gov site in an unrelated niche.

IMO it’s all about opportunity cost. With only so many hours in the day and so many to devote to blogging, you must consider what you are giving up when you accept any opportunity.

The PR of a site is, without question, a consideration when deciding where to guest blog. But if it’s the only one, then the decision isn’t logical.

    Good insights, Karl, as usual.

Karl great article for our weekly word challenge. I would have to agree with your opinion 100%. Just because a website doesn’t have page rank today doesn’t mean it won’t be a page rank 8 in a year from now. Guest posting shouldn’t be about that crap anyways. I think in the same manner as you and I like to meet new people, build relationships and gain new readers.

That individual whom made the pr comment is your typical blogger in today’s blogosphere. This is what we have become and it’s not so nice. I know we have many genuine bloggers but they are hard to come by now a days. Everyone is out to be better then each other when we should all just work together.

I didn’t publish a comment that someone left here, they hadn’t read the article but the comment was along the lines of, ‘yeah totally agree, if they have rubbish PR I don’t want them linking to me either’… just shows you the mindset of some people.

It’s a shame on one hand but then it also allows the genuine bloggers out there like yourself to really shine through with how all the great info and support you give fellow bloggers trying to make their way through the maze of the ‘good’ and the ‘bad’ blog information that is out there.

I think that even if there wasn’t linking at all, still, it would be so beneficial for you to write that post, because it builds your credibility and authority in your field.

It means your opinion can get further and reach more people, thus building more awareness about your blog and about you as an expert on topic you are writing on.

So, never look at the guest posting just as a way of link-building strategy, because it has so many benefits that sometimes people aren’t aware of so they easily over-see them.

Hey, Interesting perspective about the topic.
I have come across a lot of people with this mindset. Even when you are link building, linking requests are often turned down just because people think that you website/blog is not ranked well. This post will change that mindset of at least people who read this.
Another point of worth is the fact that it is not always “Page rank” that matters. Your objective might be link building but, there are other advantages to writing a guest post. You present yourself in front of a new audience, you get more and more traffic because of the circulation of the blog with blog directories, increased RSS subscribers, more publicity and more ideas for your blog (of course, from the comments that this new traffic will leave on your blog).

As I stated above, ‘If a site looks reputable, has good content, is building a following and the site owner is actively involved in making the site a success, why not get involved no matter what the site’s PageRank is?’ I personally would still stick to sites with related themes to my site as anything too far from my comfort zone and I’d probably do more harm than good. :)

Nice one Karl! I couldn’t agree with you more about this. We recently wrote an article about our PR going down from 5 to a PR1. http://bit.ly/cdTzQl – not to be a link hound

Google humbled us. 5 months ago we had people emailing us daily about link exchanges and how they could purchase an ad. Now that we added “ads” to our site is when we noticed a new drop in PR. No one seems to want to buy an ad on our site since it has a new PR1.

It resolved the issue and the PR should be going up promptly, but everyone else is now scared to buy a cheap $19 ad from us. I think that it’s a dumb business decision as we still have all the same traffic – even more now!

If people go around making connections based on the ‘what’s in it for me’ mentality it will seriously limit the genuine relationships they could be building.

You never now when someone will extend their hand out to you based on a guest post or a comment you’ve left somewhere, a comment like the ‘guy’ left will only close doors for him along the way.

The benefits of guest posting are well documented and i enjoy them as well as anyone else. But the additional opportunity of meeting new people and sharing a common interests is very valuable for me as well.

Cherry-picking blogs to guest post on is short-sighted at best, save for something completely out of one’s arena.

How would one expect to be welcomed on a highly successful site when they have never cut their teeth on any other blog. Do it for the experience of nothing else.

What you described earlier was a “me-first” attitude, the likes of which is quite prevalent on today’s internet.

    I enjoyed the post, man.

It seems the mystery commenter missed the most important detail, you’re guest blogging for their readers, not the search engines.

I will be guest blogging a lot while working on my theme. I’ll look primarily at 3 things… feed numbers if displayed, comment count and the comments themselves.

This is assuming I approach blogs where I don’t already know the owner/community there. ;)

I complete agree with you Karl, everyone is way to obsessed with PR. I had a PR1 site at one point and was talking with someone about doing a post exchange, and he said no because the PR was 1, then in the next update the site went to PR4 and he came back and asked me again, and I just laughed.

PR is over rated, PR changes all the time, I focus more on the content of the site, and as you said, guest blogging can bring a lot of potential readers and audience.

And another factor in all this is that healthy backlink profiles consist of a variety of links, low and high PR, no follow and do follow, get all the links you can get, and you won’t be sorry.

Absolutely JR, diversification of links, traffic stream (and income streams) is what SEO and Internet marketing is about.

See, what you say here, ‘I had a PR1 site at one point and was talking with someone about doing a post exchange, and he said no because the PR was 1, then in the next update the site went to PR4 and he came back and asked me again, and I just laughed…’ totally proves my point, if you burn a bridge with someone because you do not see any benefit in the arrangement and then come back asking to guest post now their PR is higher then you have to expect that person to say ‘no’ (or laugh as in your case :) ).

Thanks for taking the time to visit and for leaving a comment.

    Karl,

This is a great post. I have been wanting to do a post trying to get guest writers, but I was concerned about my low page rank and how new my site is.

I believe what you say about guest posting to be true. If a site has a low page rank, I still would guest post because there is always a chance for the rank to go up and it does give you traffic and new readers that found you through that other site.

I think you’ll find a diverse mindset and set of ideals that people carry in regards to blogging, SEO, Internet marketing, etc but, yes, on-page optimisation and links are important elements of search engine optimisation; at the least, they are very good starting points for people to concentrate on getting right.

People are picky like that sometimes. Alot of folks put a little to much emphasis on PR and Alexa. I can’t lie I’m somewhat obsessed with my Alexa ranking, my site is only a couple months old, but wouldn’t use that as a measuring stick of whether or not to do a guest post.

“If a site looks reputable, has good content, is building a following and the site owner is actively involved in making the site a success, why not get involved no matter what the site’s PageRank is?”

    Good point, good post brotha.

    Hey Karl,
I’ve been thinking about guest posting here but to be honest I don’t feel I’m qualified since I’m not an SEO blogger.

Just so you and Kelly know that I have been thinking about it and when I come up with a great post idea I’ll fill out the application and hopefully I’ll get hired. ;)

I signed up for MyBlogGuest and I need to be more active like Hesham (when I grow up I want to be just like him).

It’s a good site but between Blazing Minds, Famous Bloggers and FMSSEO I think I’ve got my work cut out for me already. The good thing about that is – I’ve already done my research ;)

Thanks for the post, it’s really amazing when you see a comment from an unfamiliar blogger and you end up writing a post just to set your readers straight in case they happen to read that nonsense too. btw – I love this blog.

I’ve seen guys set up wordpress themes with a link in the footer, give them away and within a couple months hit PR4… PR has a lot to do with quantity. A couple backlinks from PR6 or higher or several from PR1 or lower…

Your right though, guest blogging not only increases backlinks but also build authority and personal branding

This is the second post about guest blogging that I came across today and I have been seeing them around daily! :-) No doubt, guest blogging is a reliable strategy for many reasons. I agree, it won’t be reasonable to turn down low rank blogs simply because of the PR issue. For me, I’m more into discovering blogs with niche like topics and quality content, also the engagement of the author with readers. ^^

I hope I’m a prolific writer for I won’t hesitate to guest post at all. It takes time to produce good content but I’ll treat this as a learning point to be better. Thanks for bringing up this subject, Karl.

Great post as far as adding some excellent points about guest posting. Here’s my real opinion . One along time ago when I was a real new jack that chick blew me off and NO I won’t join no scam ass site ;) Basically
I don’t guest post or ask people. I used to offer people all kinds of things ut you’d be surprised how often people say all this awesome stuff and then don’t follow through for example I will shoot a 20 that certain people don’t bother to stop for a sec and say thanks ;) I think an excellent way to BUST out in SEO and prove all those gurus like Danny Sullivan who I have went at it with more then once to make your site do follow. That would make YOUR links stronger and everyone elses. I don’t mean to sound negative or get on you ut if I didn’t like you and think your a great thinker etc I would of just flew past this post.To me SEO is a art ,hobby not something that should give some people an excuse to think they are all that. I’m IRISH to me that chick isn’t to Smarty because I remember when I get dissed and have no problem telling an over rated seo suck up my piece :) Like I said this comment although a bit harsh may save you time wasted with people that are using YOU ;)

Can’t help but feel invigorated, after reading this post, at trying my hand on both sides of the fence…that is on trying to guest blog on other sites and accept guest bloggers on mine.

This early in my blogging venture, I have learned that relying on PR scores is like putting your blogs life entirely at the mercy of Google. And I still could not really understand how some sites change PR in an instant. Somehow feels like google is playing God with blogs. Well, I do like it when google raises my PR status a notch, and also feel really sick when some site I’m promoting suddenly tanks out of the serps.

My Blog’s page rank went from 3 to 1 after the Google Page rank update. I don’t know what happened suddenly. But the fact about Page rank is that most people don’t care about their Page rank. I think most advertisers only look at the alexa ranking(Which is not trustworthy either). Interesting Post Idea Karl !! I mean you didn’t write about the usual “increase you page rank” post. I also like your “thought” about the today’s newbie blogger as tomorrow’s problogger.

I could not agree with you more Karl. PageRank does seem to cause people to do (or not do) strange things. If no new sites ever got a break, the game would be fixed and no one could ever rise to the top. I’ve always considered guest blogging to be a traffic and relationship builder, not a PR builder. Besides, low PR does not mean you can’t get top rankings in search engines. It’s one factor among many that helps Google rank your site.
