Google PageRank Score Too Low? Keep Your Links Thank You

This article is not going to be about PageRank or your Google PageRank score but rather a mindset that seems prevalent on the net right now.

If you want to read more about Google’s PageRank then you can get up to speed by visiting here.

Guest blogging is a great way to way to promote your site and generate inbound links to your site (if the site allows it), this is without mentioning the additional benefits of getting your message in front of new readers and building relationships with other web site owners.

Guest blogging is beneficial to all parties involved and has given rise to great sites like Ann Smarty’s My Blog Guest that you can read more about here.

You are probably wondering where all this is leading so I’ll get to the point.

I was reading a site that was promoting the fact that they are now accepting guest blogging.

What prompted me to write this post was what someone had said in the comment section that went something like this:

“You won’t have many people take you up on your offer as your Google PageRank score is too low”

He then went on to say that he certainly wouldn’t be wasting his time writing for such low ranked site.

As this is not the first time I have seen such a comment, or mentality, I decided to write this post to clear something up.

Google PageRank Score And Link Building

I understand what the commenter was saying but I feel that he is missing the point.

Guest blogging will put your message in front of a new audience, an audience (if you have done your research) that will respond well to your message and earn you new readers.

The inbound links you can build through guest blogging are an added bonus if the site allows you to link out to your site.

BUT here is the main error in this guys thinking.

A website that has a low PageRank today may have a very good PR score tomorrow so why NOT take the site owner up on their offer.

With this particular mindset in place, if the site owner does get a good PageRank they may decide to NO longer accept YOUR guest post on their nicely scored site, meaning you have effectively cost yourself  (what you considered) a worthy link.

This goes for any type of link building, sites with a good PageRank may similarly lose their ranking along the way so do not stress about it too much.

If a site looks reputable, has good content, is building a following and the site owner is actively involved in making the site a success, why not get involved no matter what the site’s PageRank is?

What’s your view on this? Let me know by leaving a comment below.

On that note, happy link building.

To your success,

Karl Foxley

  1. Before, all I look at is the site’s PR but now there’s more to a site then just PR. A new site will have a PR0 for about 3-6 months their PR will change. It can go from PR0 to PR3 when google bot updates the PR.

Like you said, if the site has good contents and looks professionally done then there’s a good change that it will succeed.

  3. Yes many make this mistake, they are judging the site after the PR, but as you say, it will be their loss.

  4. A lot of people seem to be too obsessed with the little green bar, forgetting the main thing about it – it’s not live!! I’ve had many backlinks over the years that I’ve worked hard to get based on their PR, only to see the PR drop like a brick on the next update!! I tend to judge a site on content, not PR – if it’s good and I find it useful, does it really matter what the little green bar says. Like you say, you could be turning down the opportunity to write for a blog that 12 months down the line has a PR7 – the best sites generally rise to the top eventually….

  5. I really hope a number of bloggers have changed their tune after reading this. It’s excellent advice. People just really don’t know what all goes into Page Ranking and put way too much on it. This is a great post. Thanks!

  6. Now I see why this article had such a high rating. I totally agree with you on the points you listed out. After all, do not despise the days of little beginners! That’s what I believe. Just cos I’m nothing now, doesn’t mean I won’t be something tomorrow. However, that said, when it comes to SEO you do have to be careful where you put your link. Hence saying that, I believe you just need to study the website to see if its legit or not. If it’s a clean site that just started out, I’ll definitely willing to jump on board. However, if its a site that’s been around for years and nothing to show for it, than I would begin to wonder and probably dig a little deeper to find out why…

  7. Good points. As you say a bigger factor to me is the quality of the blog. Thee are many good quality blogs with low PR. And PR does not necessarily equate to traffic.

But that is not where I thought you were going. I see a lot of blogs that don’t filter their comments. they have a ton of comments from spam sites. If it is really bad I don’t comment because I don’t want a link from a site that is perceived as bad in Google’s eyes.

    • ‘If it is really bad I don’t comment because I don’t want a link from a site that is perceived as bad in Google’s eyes.’ Absolutely Ned, it just becomes a waste of time and energy to comment on a such a blog.

  8. I agree completely. Page Rank is a moving target and in the eyes of many it’s on the way out in terms of being able to evaluate the potential for acquiring good SERP’s. Recently, PR was quietly removed from Webmaster Tools. This, among other factors, indicate to many that the nature of link popularity is changing as is the effect on ranking.

The focus is shifting to good, solid, sticky traffic. If you place an article in the right place that captures the right audience and it is good enough to attract someone to you site who might hang around and check you out – mission accomplished! If that happens, I could care less about the PR of the page – it could be a goose egg for all I care.

  9. I try not to let myself judge a blog by it’s PR, especially if it’s low. If the content is relevant and the writing is good, subject matter discussed in an intelligent way, and if it is interesting to me, of value to me, worth my time to read and comment, then I don’t care about it’s PR being a 0.

Like Karl so aptly points out here, a blog with 0 pagerank today, may not always be that way.
