Getting constant streams of visitors is a problem that most website owners regularly face. Good search engine placement can earn a website a lot of free traffic so make sure you at least learn the fundamentals of search engine optimisation (or outsource your SEO) to ensure your site naturally lists well.

Adding a variety of online marketing strategies can help you to diversify your visitor streams and below you will discover a list of alternative ways you can do this.

I recommend you only us the traffic generation methods that you feel comfortable using. Below you will find some of the usual suspects and maybe a few that you hadn’t heard of or thought of using before. Enjoy!

Write A Press Release

Write a press release about your latest website or service. The benefit of doing this is that you will get lots of search engine optimised links (if you do it properly) spread across the web on authority sites pointing back to your website. Do you have anything news worthy to write about? I recommend you use PR Web for handling your press releases. Submitting a press release is well worth the fee.

Also try:

1888 Press Release

PR Leap

Employ An Affiliate Workforce

Do you have a product or service? Why not recruit an army of affiliate marketers to go out and promote your product / service for you! This can method of traffic generation can see you get masses of traffic.

If you have a digital product then list it on:

Clickbank

Pay Dot Com

E-Junkie

If you sell a service or tangible products then try:

Affiliate Announcer - get your affiliate programme in front of thousands of affiliates every day.

Joint Ventures

Joint ventures are one of the best traffic generation methods around. I’ve written the Guru Traffic Secret Report that covers this method further. You can find JV partners from dedicated websites such as JV Network. Alternatively, find website and product owners that are a good fit for your business and contact them regarding a link, ad or email swap.

Advertising Browser Ads

Free Traffic Bar sites on your browser and displays ads for every page you surf. For each page that you surf you earn credits that can be used to show your ad on other peoples browsers who have the Free Traffic Bar installed. This means that you will earn credits for surfing the web as you would normally. Works with Internet Explorer and Firefox browsers.

Also try:

Instant Buzz

Further reading:

Free Traffic Bar Advertising (article removed)

Instant Buzz and Instant Buzz Mastery (article removed)

Traffic Exchanges

Not everyone likes these websites so using them is at your discretion. Register with the sites below, add your website details and then manually surf other peoples websites. You’ll earn credits so that you can send a number of visitors to your website. The best way to use these is to create a splash page (has a headline, an eye-catching graphic and a call to action that encourages surfers to click through to your actual website) For more details on this method and a list of the best exchange then click here to read Top Traffic Exchanges (article removed).

Safelists

Safelists are another controversial traffic method but if you know what you are doing then this is a great traffic generation method. A safelist is not spamming, people opt-in to receive your email. I recommend you create a squeeze page (look at Guru Traffic Secret (site removed) for an example of a squeeze page) and use AWeber or iContact to capture leads and build a subscriber list.

I recommend Blast Your Ad.

Resource: Online Selling For Newbies

List Builders

Build your mailing list by joining list-builder sites. To really benefit from these types of websites you need to upgrade your accounts from free to paid membership. For example, if you upgrade at Downline Builder Direct you will be able to email 20,000 random members every two days. This method of traffic generation is not for everyone so only use it if you feel comfortable in doing so. I recommend sending people straight to a squeeze mail and getting them onto your email list.

Also try:

List Dot Com

Build My Downlines

List Auction

Software

Have you developed software or widgets that you would like to give away for free. Maybe you have a trial version. Then you can get a serious amount of traffic from adding your software to Download.com.

Also try:

Brothersoft

Free Download Center

Website Directories

Add your website to dedicated website directories. Only submit your site or blog to directories that are what they say they are and not link farms. I recommend Best of the Web (they also have a blog directory) and Yahoo’s Directory.

Pay Per Click Advertising

Pay per click advertising allows you to advertise across content networks and in the search engines sponsored results driving you lots of targeted traffic. You will need to understand how PPC works to fully capitalise on this marketing method but, when you do, the payoff can be huge.

Recommended networks:

Adwords

Bidvertiser

Adbrite

Yahoo

Ask

Hub Pages

Hub Pages allows you to create Hubs on particular topics you wish to write about. Your hubs can receive trememdous amounts of traffic and you should create a complete profile pointing back to your website.

Squidoo

Very similar to Hub Pages except you create lens. Visit Squidoo and create your first lens. For both Hub Pages and Squidoo you want to create each Hub / Lens about an individual topic.

Ezine Advetising

Ezines are newsletters that people have signed up to in their area of interest. What this means to you as an advertiser is that you can pay a small fee to advertise in an Ezine that is sent to your target market. To learn more about this form of marketing you need to take a look at The Directory of Ezines. Visit The Ezine Directory to find Ezines in your niche.

Posterous

If you want a bit more Twitter but not as much as a blog then Posterous is the perfect middle ground for you. If you have short blog posts that you question are right for your blog then post them on Posterous. You can get a good amount of traffic from using the site.

Blogging

Creating a blog is a great way to drive traffic to your main website or products. Blogs are loved by the search engines and are readily indexed. You can set up a blog on dedicated sights like Blogger or WordPress. However, I recommend you host your own blog using either WordPress.org‘s self hosted blogging platform or Blog i360.

MyBlogLog

BlogCatalog

Technorati

Pijoo

Blogging Traffic Tactics

Blog Commenting – visit top blogs in your niche or business sector and comment on the blog posts. Add value and provide a solid contribution to each site and you will be rewarded with visitors to your website who want to learn more about you. Most blogs will allow you to add your website URL so make sure that you do.

Become A Guest Blogger - like a blog in your niche? Why not submit a guest post with the only requirement is that you are allowed to link out to your website.

Share Your Posts - let your readers and other blog owners know that they can use your content as long as they link back to your website.

Conclusion

Getting visitors to your website can be easy when you know how! I hope you’ve enjoyed this post. If you think there is anything I’ve missed then drop me a line and I’ll add it in there somewhere.

To your success,

Awesome article with tons of great resources and tips. My best technique that gets me the most traffic is social bookmarking. I get a lot of traffic from StubmpleUpon and Digg. Squidoo is on my second place, it’s good for traffic and backlinks.

Woaaaaah, that was a complete list of traffic sources.

Will definitely go to scribd since i want to launch a free ebook in pdf file.

I guess scribd is a good choice since people can download from there (saving bandwidth).

Thanks for your effort of the list Karl!

Wow, this list is so comprehensive – well done. I was thinking of my top favourites when I was writing my blog the other day. I really like Blog Communities, and utilising Social Media – Facebook, Twitter, You Tube and Linked In. But most importantly, unless you write great content on your site, driving all the traffic in the world to your site is unless if people cannot find quality content. Also the quality and regularly-updated content will be great for organic SEO.

    Thank you for sharing.

I would like to suggest some additional traffic generation method – create an info product, or get some relevant to the topic products to resell and then run your offer via affiliate network to make affiliates drive traffic to your site. You pay commission on sales without putting time into actual work when the system runs on autopilot.

Then you can monetize your traffic in many ways – AdSense, Affiliate offers etc..

Btw, speaking of monetization via affiliate sales…

It’s interesting that majority of bloggers didn’t incorporate it yet in their monetization model, I guess it’s just a matter of awareness.

All those who include it in their program report that it’s their #1 monetization option in comparison with other income sources, since the payout per sale in extremely high, not like traditional CPA models.

Commission for PPD programs range from $1,000 to $20,000 per single deal! So, as a result, all you need is targeted blog. You don’t even need to sweat on building high traffic, as to make $10K/month all one needs is to make couple of conversions.

    It’s a goldmine!

Once again, thank you for sharing.

I found the list very valuable. There were some sites that I was not aware of.

A lot of the work, in my opinion, is to figure out which of the sources generate the traffic that you are looking for. If you get a lot of traffic but most of your visitors exit within 10 seconds, that is not very valuable. I would rather receive 10 visitors than 100 visitors if the majority of those 10 visitors end up coming back again, when those 100 visitors leave immediately!

You know, my problem is not so much generating traffic, although that would also be a concern. My problem is that I have no deep knowledge or skill to sell once people come to the site.

I have learned that just because I have an opinion doesn’t mean I have something to say.

What do you say to an average person with nothing in particular to say about traffic? What’s the point?

I hope you don’t mind me sharing my experience as I found what works for some does not for everyone.

I’ve written many articles & submitted them to various directories. Directories don’t bring a lot of traffic I have found, but they do create backlinks.

Looking at my traffic sources in the past month I received 1 visit from articlebase.com

BlogCatalog’s traffic ends once you quit posting on the forums. I found there directory doesn’t bring traffic.

I have an interesting story about warrior forum, but think I’ll share that with you in private.

Twitter & BlogEngage are great traffic sources. I see a few visits from
squidoo.com so my link must be on a lense somewhere.

Hi Rose, Absolutely, some places end up being much better at providing a link than traffic. I’ve not written about it yet but there are a few directory type sites that are our biggest referrer of traffic, even more than BE and Twitter (a post for another day).

I’d love to hear your experience with the Warrior Forum Rose so feel free to send that email. :)

    Hi Karl, Kelly, everybody, ..
Few weeks, i loose my energy just for look out and visit the guidelines to be successful from the experience. including fmsseo dot com.
Thanks for how to achieve this traffic tricks. Mmm,.. Easy to read, but for now may be very difficult to do because of my regular job, 5 days a week, from 07.30 until 18:00 was exhausting. :(

    By the way, ..
You forgot one thing, maybe. All traffic likely to be achieved in the above materials can be wasted when our site taking too long for loading process. Except for fanatic visitor. In another conversation (rose’s place), I try to maintain an attitude to a commitment. Apparently, I was wrong. Average of my visitor have been closed my query to the url on all the loading process, before seeing my postings.
Well, too much scripting, site design appearance that is not supported by all types of browsers, are some causes. It’s about code and semantic validation. FWIW
Absolutely, I do not understand the ways of good marketing, but if i have a time, I will try your tips and tricks, one to another.

Hopefully Santa’s hat can bring a blessing to me, like a “snowman” in fmsseo :)

    Regard

      Hi Harry,

‘You forgot one thing, maybe. All traffic likely to be achieved in the above materials can be wasted when our site taking too long for loading process…’ Although fast loading pages is something to aim for that is something for a different post. With any traffic generation method, test one and see if it works, if it does then stick with it and if it doesn’t, don’t be afraid to drop it and move on.

    Hey Karl,

That is a monster of a post and some great information as usual. I haven’t been to your site in about 2 weeks. I must say I like the new look. I noticed you changed your domain as well. That must have been a monster of a project. Looks like you pulled it off and are already rocking and rolling with the new domain.

My reader has about 10 new posts from you I still need to get to. It sucks getting behind :-)

I have never heard of Blog Engage until you mentioned it. Sounds like something I should check out.

Hey Damon, great to see you visiting again. I visited Blogged.com today and there you were in the featured bloggers gallery. :)

The transition from the old URL to our new one was a lengthy process and not much fun but we are hopefully back on track now.

Our search traffic has taken a huge dip but we expect that to pick up soon.

BlogEngage certainly has a more active community than similar styled sites. I wrote a post about it that you may find useful (if you haven’t seen it already) ‘BlogEngage Can Make You A Better Blogger‘.

Cool, I was featured? That is neat. I will have to go on there and check it out. Thanks for following me. I haven’t done much with blogged.com, I probably signed up because you recommended it at some point :-) .

Ya, I read your post about Blog Engage last week, and checked it out, just haven’t taken the time to sign up yet. There are just so many things, I have to make sure I don’t let my content slip :-)

I have you in my reader so I always get your posts, just haven’t been to the actual site for a week or so. I can imagine how much work it was to switch everything. But looking at your Alexa on the new site, it won’t be long until your traffic surpasses the old site. The one bummer I noticed that you don’t get to keep your page rank, but with your content, I have no doubt it will be right back up there soon.

Great post. It’s too bad I can’t access the WarriorForum site. I am currently located in China, and this place just blocks the heck out of many places, sometimes stupidly.

But I took a lot of valuable information from your post. Much appreciated.

I’m glad you liked the post Robert.

That’s a real shame as the Warrior Forum is a great place to learn the latest goings-on in Internet marketing.

I’ve heard about Warrior Forum that it is blocked in few other Asian countries too. Is that true? What is the reason of this? Why do they block it. It is really a great source of learning and getting the help 24×7.

WOW, what a list. It will take me a month of Sundays just to do those. I guess one has to pick and choose what works for you. But nonetheless a perfect list of resources to choose from.
Some of them I already used. Others I have contemplated to use but never got round to doing so.

Forums, especially the Warrior Forum, are great places to connect with like-minded people.

I have threads in some forums that still send me traffic many months after the thread was first created.

Thanks for taking the time to comment Satrap.

Great post, as usual. I’m new to the world of blogging, so posts like this are very helpful to me. I’m using word press for my blog and it takes a few seconds to load sometimes. What can I do to speed up my page load time? Thanks.

There are some plugins that can help, Smush.it (for your images), WP Super Cache, CSS Compress will help.

Be sure to backup WP before you activate a new plugin as this will save you a lot of hassle if things go wrong.

Wow, this is an amazing list. I’ve had some success with some of these but others I hadn’t even thought of trying. Thanks for sharing.
I’m curious about what kind of images you are putting on Flickr that will generate blog traffic.

I found Squidoo very time consuming and not worth the effort, maybe I need to look at it again.

I’m very interested in podcasting – I’d better get started on some of these.

    Thanks again!

The beauty of the Internet is that you can outsource a great number of tasks. I would recommend testing and measuring what brings you the best results for time invested and what doesn’t. Use what works for you as it will vary for everyone.
