The Really Sneaky CommentLuv Trick For Better Blog Marketing And Promotion!

The Really Sneaky CommentLuv Trick For Better Blog Marketing And Promotion!

Posted by Karl Foxley in Blog, Blogging, Coaching, Plugins, Wordpress

Are you using CommentLuv to generate traffic and links to your blog?

If you are wondering what CommentLuv is then please take a moment to read our previous post,  ’Who Else Wants Access To The Largest Database Of CommentLuv Enabled Blogs On The Internet.’

The post will help you to get to grips with what CommentLuv is and how to get started using it!

Right, back to the subject at hand, I’ve called this post my ‘really sneaky CommentLuv trick for better blog marketing and promotion‘ because titles like this generate curiosity, but, in actuality, this sneaky tip is just good blog promotion.

You see, when you leave a comment on a CommentLuv Enabled Blog you will also be able to leave a link to your most recent blog post. One of the greatest benefits of registering your site over at CommentLuv is that you will gain access to some extra features that you’ll need to market your blog more effectively.

Below you will see how the CommentLuv plugin works when leaving a comment.

Last Blog Post

Last Blog Post

Now, being able to leave a link to your last blog post along with your comment is a good way to get some extra visitors.

But, we can do much better!

The image below shows you what you’ll see before you register with the CommentLuv site.

CommentLuv Registration Benefits

You see, when you register your blog the image above will look more like this:

Last 10 Blog Posts

Now you’ll have access to your last ten blog posts to choose from when leaving your link along with your comment.

For my blog marketing and promotion method to be super beneficial you should be commenting as usual and always trying to provide value. However, now when you leave a comment you should be much more selective about the link you leave behind.

Let’s say I visit 3 CommentLuv enabled blogs each day.

Blog 1 has a recent post about ‘Blog Commenting‘.

I would leave the following URL.

Blog Commenting

Blog 2 has a recent post about ‘WordPress Plugins‘.

I would leave the following URL:

Wordpress Plugins

Blog 3 has a recent post about ‘Traffic Generation‘.

I would now change my link to:

Traffic Generation

The intention is to closely match your link to the content of the blog post.

This has two benefits:

Firstly, readers of the blog will see that your link closely matches the content of the post and this gives them somewhere further to go; if they are down in the comment area you can be pretty sure that they are interested in that particular subject (a targeted visitor).

Secondly, the blog author, when approving your comment will see your link and may visit your site to see what you have to say on the subject, after all, they’ve just wrote about it (and may even leave a comment in the process).

I visit a lot of CommentLuv enabled blogs in the course of a week and you’ll be surprised how many comments are left with links to unrelated topics. Try it for yourself and let me know how you get on!

If blog commenting is a part of your blog marketing and promotion routine then the few minutes spent registering your site with CommentLuv will be a great addition to your efforts.

I hope you liked this tip and if you have anything to add feel free to leave a comment below.

To your success,

Karl Foxley

Too bad Commentluv doesn’t support Joomla. I would definetly use it on the blogs that I manage.

    Hi Karl,

Yes, the new CommentLuv plugin is awesome for selecting the best post from the last 10 posts.

If the objective is clickthroughs, the best option is to find the most closely related posts, however if the objective is backlinks, then you might want to choose the post that you’re attempting to get backlinks to.

You pointed out a key fact that most people miss: commenting on thematically related posts. Simply do a search of keyword luv blogs related to your post and add your comments. As you mention, it’s probably the best link next to a contextual link that you can get.

I am just getting started and did not even think about the significance of adding a link to the post on my blog that is the most closely related to the post I comment on. I think that is also a very good tip due to the SEO effect on your site as well. Closely related pages that link to you always carry more weight.

Another Really Sneaky CommentLuv Trick is just before you submit your comment change the website url field from your website to a deep link within your website that you want extra link luv to. This works especially well when used in conjunction with KeywordLuv enabled blogs that use CommentLuv since you can target a keyword phrase with a specific page on your site instead of just the home page. A Word of caution though – be sure to copy your comment before doing so as occasionally I have had blogs wig out when doing this and I have lost comments.

As you are using wp-subscription manager just go to it’s setting page and change the template with your header, sidebar, and footer. This will help you get more hits when people try to unsubscribe or manage their subscription.

Karl, the blockquote tag works (above) but wraps text around it somehow. And when I left the comment, I got an error page that said “duplicate content was detected,” but it seemed to post anyway. Hmmm.

I have it activated on two of my current sites. I quite like it. Did have a problem with ComLuv/SexyBookmarks/FormBuilder, so switched to a different form plugin.

Thanks Alison. We are looking into a fix. Not sure why blockquote is doing that but noticed that when the text is long enough to cover the majority of the text area it formats properly. Another one of those teething problems.

thanks for the suggestion but what it changed was the only thing i could easily change myself :( what i don’t like is things like when it finds an article, it shows it as a link which if clicked goes to the current page, but without the typed comments (makes no sense why it needs be a link), also even worse is that if a visitor puts in a link with no blog then doesn’t know what commentluv is and just clicks, they are shown an error message saying “oh no, error this…” which is not changable afaik. this may work on tech blogs but i’m a little skeptical for my niche and could scare people away. this is what i’d like to customise but it appears to be generated remotely at commentluv servers, not mine. bad decision imo

If you look at the comments above you will see that CommentLuv was enabled as the links still remain from our previous commentators.

The plugin is currently conflicting with something else on our site and until it is resolved had to be deactivated. I’d rather not have a logo saying we are CommentLuv enabled when it is not working properly (which will be misleading).

Hope that clears things up for you Adam and stops you from feeling lost.

It’s interesting seeing the pros and cons to CommentLuv. I’ve read a few blogs who have put in nofollow as they were getting too much spam. We entice people to act on things all over the web, why not do the same to spark participation. I’m also interested in the Keyword Luv plugin which I’ve recently found, Allowing you to control the anchor tech while posting your comment. I suppose you could do the same, by modifying your blog post, but none the less interesting.

For those with Feed issues and feedburner, there is information on the CommentLuv website about that, and avoiding using the feedburner proxy url.

      Hi Kevin,

CommentLuv has it’s pro’s and it’s con’s and this depends on the aims of your website. KeywordLuv is an interesting plugin but, last time I checked, the plugin author had removed it from his own blog. I’m personally not a fan as many people still just use their keywords rather than their name followed by a keyword as is clearly stated in the comment section (when the plugin is activated).

      Thanks for dropping in Kevin.

Thx for your reply. I’m not sure if you’re seeing the same thing as me when you hover over the CommentLuv link on comments. For me, it says something to the effect of “this is a feedburner link – member cannot be found”.

CommentLuv support had a good step by step process to edit your feedburner settings to get around this. I have a feeling it might just be a caching issue now.

I’m not sure why, I’m sure you’ve already contacted Andy at ComLuv but he’d be the man to get things working for you.

  70. GrowMap | December 9, 2009 at 3:23 pm

I don’t know how many will see my comment but one important thing to remember – and that we CommentLuv users may want to add to our posts about how to use it like this one – is that you must enter your Website EXACTLY the way you registered it with ComLuv.

If you don’t see your latest 10 posts the most likely cause is leaving off or adding the www in your URL, adding or leaving off the trailing / and possibly using a different mix of lower and upper case (not sure about that last one as I don’t remember if it is case-sensitive or not. Andy could tell us for sure.

For those who are REALLY serious about increasing their traffic from better search engine positions as well as inviting readers to their blog, combine CommentLuv with KeywordLuv. Ideally you want your anchor text (the words that are actually linked) to land on the best possible page. I’ve explained how in a post called Blog Traffic Up 54.87% that stays in my Most Popular Section.

You have to have good timing for that to work; however, I mention it here so that even if a blogger is not personally interested in doing it themselves that they be generous enough to allow other bloggers to use a specific link when using KeywordLuv.

Karl: CommentLuv is really an awesome plugin, initially I just put it on my blog like any other plugin but later on I got to know its effective usage.

The only problem is I got addicted to put mouse over the “heart” icon and it sends request to CommentLuv administration for retrieving the links and other data which causes me to wait with a similar to message “too many requests from this IP, please wait”.

Anyway, it is a great plugin.

One suggestion, I haven’t seen a blog before that moved “older comments” to another page. It wasn’t expected so I kept going scrolling around trying to find the missing comments. Finally I saw the “older comments” link, but it’s pretty small and inconspicuous. Maybe it could be more prominent?

There is something that I do though. Once I’ve written the comment and selected the CommentLuv link, I change the website url to point to another of my blogs thereby getting two links with one comment.

As an example, the url linked to Sire leads to one of my Photo Blogs.

    Solid info, Karl.

Here’s my question. The CommentLuv site has a big button that says, “Register Your Sites.” Clicking on that, however, take me to my ComLuv Member Page which lists my Personal Info and Main url. I can’t see a way to register my other “sites.”

So, my Pix2Brix.com/blog (my “main url”) gives me the drop-down options, but my other sites don’t. Following your advice on THIS post, for example, I’d use my Win with 1 blog, not my Pix2Brix blog, but on that one it only shows my last post.

Can anyone else see how to register more than one site there?

Hey Karl thanks so much for participating in our blogengage weekly word challenge. Just so you know I have manually sent your article to our front page as a thank you for posting and joining in.

I use Comment LUV but an FYI it’s only good if you want to use it forever. When you remove the plugin all the links stay. It would be a pain to have to go back and manually remove so many links.

Why remove links many would ask? Selling value of your website/blog would be decreased with too many random articles unrelated back links.

Perhaps it’s something the Comment LUV team needs to take into consideration. Besides that I’m with you I like it a lot and so do many other bloggers!

    Hallo Karl ( & Kelly ),

Thanks for posting so informatively on this topic … I’ve been using DISQUS until now and have basically been really happy with it. However, having read Danny Brown’s take on DISQUS at http://dannybrown.me/2009/11/30/goodbye-disqus-hello-wordpress/ – and now your post, I’ve decided to go along with the current wave of enthusiasm about CommentLuv.

Very interested to see what the results of this move are … and will send some feedback here before too long.

    Best wishes

    Will
P.S. If you don’t already know Danny Brown, you might well want to check out his blog at http://dannybrown.me and also his charity site at http://12for12k.org. Smart guy, really.

      Hey Will,

      Glad you found it useful.

I read Danny’s post, I think it floated past my Facebook feed, and was meaning to comment.

Yeah, Danny’s a great guy and shares some great info; I follow his Posterous updates.

I have a few questions for you Will and, if you don’t mind, I’ll fire you an email at some point today or tomorrow.

I heard that putting comment luv on your blog slowed it wayyy down? Have you had that issue? I didn’t know you could register though so I’ll go do that now. Luckily my last post it’s pulling up is roughly related. Thanks for the info.

Personally I’ve not noticed it but if anyone else can let us know their findings that would be great.

The beauty of registering with the CommentLuv site doesn’t mean you have to use the plugin on your site.

Thanks for visiting and taking the time to comment,

      Karl
